About Serenity End-of-Life Doula

Meet Rayma Volkmer: Your Compassionate End-of-Life & Pet Companion Doula

Growing up and living on a quiet, peaceful farm outside Wymore, Nebraska, taught me a deep respect for the natural cycles of life, healing, and letting go. My path to becoming a certified end-of-life doula and Pet Companion Doula was born out of a profound desire to ensure that no individual, family, or beloved animal ever has to navigate the sacred threshold of death alone or in fear.

The Sacred Difference: Why I Do This Work

Serenity was born from a deeply personal experience with death—one that showed me how frightening and painful it can be when families are left unprepared.

In 2018, my mother suffered a sudden medical crisis at home. For three days, our family was surrounded by difficult decisions, confusing information, and the unbearable fear of losing someone we loved. We had no extra support team walking beside us. No one was there to gently explain what the dying process might look like or prepare us for the changes that happen near the end of life. When my mother died, we were grieving, frightened, and deeply shaken by how alone we felt.

After her death, I began searching for a better way. That is when I discovered the work of end-of-life doulas—trained, non-medical companions who offer comfort, education, emotional support, and a peaceful presence to the dying and the people who love them. I knew immediately this was the kind of support families needed. It was the kind of support we had needed.

In 2021, my father’s health began to decline. This time, I had learned what I wish I had known before. We talked about fear, faith, love, heaven, my mom, and the memories that meant the most to him. When his final moments came, there was no panic. No fear. I sat beside him, reminding him of the memories he had shared, and told him Mom was waiting for him. And then, quietly and peacefully, he was gone.

That sacred difference changed me forever.

My Training and Core Foundations of Comfort

In March 2022, I turned this calling into my life's work and became a certified Death Doula / End-of-Life Doula through the International Association of Professions Career College.

To best serve my neighbors across our local communities, my practice is grounded in deep empathy, specialized training, and a peaceful presence. Through Serenity, I am honored to provide:

  • Holistic Emotional Support: Holding a steady, judgment-free space for families processing complex terminal diagnoses or sudden losses.
  • Empathetic Grief Companioning: Standing right beside you through the heavy waves of both human and deep animal loss.
  • Regional Community Devotion: Serving rural and city communities across Southeast Nebraska, Northern Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa with dedicated, mobile travel support.

Death is never easy. But with tenderness, preparation, and a compassionate presence, it can be met with more peace, more understanding, and more love. No family should have to walk that road alone.

Whether you are planning ahead or facing a difficult goodbye, I welcome you to reach out.

Certified End-of-Life Doula

I completed my Death Doula certification through the International Association of Professions Career College in March 2022. This training deepened my calling to walk beside individuals and families with compassion, dignity, and peace during life’s final chapter.

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
when there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand,
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.” ― Francis Of Assisi
